Founded in 1952 as a charitable arm of the G.C. Murphy Co.®, the G.C. Murphy Co.® Foundation is now an independent, non-profit corporation that makes annual grants to civic, educational and cultural charitable organizations, primarily in Western Pennsylvania.

About the book
“For the Love of Murphy’s” (Penn State University Press) is a caring but honest look at one of the best-known chains of five-and-tens, the G. C. Murphy Co.® , headquartered in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.
Though not the largest chain, nor the first, Murphy’s is remembered today as a commercial trailblazer, a corporation run with honesty and integrity, and, at its peak, a retailer whose more than 500 stores managed to outsell those of the giant F. W. Woolworth Company by a factor of three to one.
About the G.C. Murphy Co.
Maybe you just knew it as the “five and 10” … or Morgan & Lindsey’s … or Murphy’s Mart. If you lived in Texas, perhaps you shopped at one of the department stores that Murphy’s operated under the names of Cobbs, Bruners and Terry Farris.
Here you’ll find a brief history of the company, a list of cities and towns where it operated, information about the G.C. Murphy Co.® Foundation, and details about the book that tells a new generation about Murphy’s, the important role it played in the lives of millions of Americans, and the stories of the people who made it great.

Scholarship
The G.C. Murphy Co.® Foundation maintains a scholarship fund at Penn State Greater Allegheny campus. Preference is given to descendants of G.C. Murphy Co.® employees, but if no qualified students apply, other applicants from Western Pennsylvania are considered. Certain restrictions apply.
Support for former employees
Many former Company employees who are near retirement or who suffered a death in their family need to know if they are eligible for pension or life insurance benefits.
